#12 Shadow Plays

The Rats patiently gnawed the walls enclosing
the Shadow Theater.


The actors have left the stage. It's in the house the drama unfolds. The darkness there is barely touched by the dim glimmer of small lamps and vast medusa-shaped chandeliers. Candles shed a misty halo on the still actors that inhabit Kara Walker's backgrounds, on the ink-black landscapes drawn by Michaela Math.
Shades, stretched on cushions adorned with patterns of the stars and moon, wait for the end of this eternal interlude. Invisible hands serve tea. Lamps swing slowly, mesmerizing.
The one who can decipher the Theater's riddle will find his way through the maze-like wings, by the shimmer of a candle. But the doors leading outside open only on Shi Guorui's foreboding world in negative.


Inside the Shadow Theater, just like anywhere else,
do not lose your way: follow the Chic Cityrats.
