Sessùn - Parishighlight

1 to 3- New Sessùn store

4 to 6- Exhibition Sessùn is like a bird

News are pouring right and left at Sessùn's.  For a start, a new store has popped open in Paris, the second one in the rue de Charonne, and a soft space full of light and authenticity. The brand also launched the Playlist line last season; just 12 items, mainly silk dresses and tuxedo pants that delineate evening silhouettes with a distinctly rock'n'roll edge. A musical inspiration that Sessùn wears on its sleeve. Designer Emma François specializes in such clever cross-overs: after a sweet Songs Collection, she has completed a new multidisciplinary project, an exhibition around the theme of the bird and its feathers that will migrate in the spring towards Marseilles and Aix-en-Provence. This airy show features the fluttering plates of Norwegian ceramic artist Astrid Sleire, delicious wooden jewels by Australian-born Naomi Murrell, as well as pictures and other lovely items in limited editions.

1- Logo on the front

2- Spring Summer 09 collection : souriceau tank top, black cotton and silk panty

3 to 6- Inside the shop

7- Transfer fishes to customize any outfit

Petit Bateau decks out its little proteges from childhood up to their adult years. It is only fitting, then, that the brand opens up its first boutique for grown-ups only. The entire store at the rue du 29 juillet has been renovated and rearranged to accomodate the homewear and outwear lines, as well as T-shirts and other creations in all manners of material, be it light jersey, linen, bamboo or organic cotton. The collections also spill out of the teenage years with the introduction of a new size, "20 ans".

The opening takes place within a rich timeframe, packed full with news: the launch of a mini-website (www.petit-bateau-mixte.fr), a touching ad campaign by Benni Valsson, a creative collaboration with designers Kitsune, not to forget a nice slice of fun in the shape of fish transfer kits to accessorize any and all outfits!

Le Studio 22 - Le Maraishighlight
  • Episode: -
  • Brand: -
  • Category: Travel

Marie and Catherine are pals. They met at a contemporary art fair in London and since then they do everything together.

They just opened Le Studio 22, a chambre d'hôte in the heart of the Haut Marais, a Parisian neighborhood whose galleries, edgy stores, good restaurants and general creative effervescence they find so inspiring.

On the other side of a former covered market that's being actively rehabilitated, behind a heavy porte cochère, the 22 rue de Picardie hides a great surprise, one of those Paris holds for the bold and the initiated. A large inner yard filled with trees where one forgets the noise of the street outside. Pure magic. Under the high boughs, the pavés lead to Studio 22. Inside it  lie, within 22 m², all of the fundamentals that let one feel (almost) at home in Paris.

The decoration scheme is deliberately downplayed. Relying on discreet harmonies of beige and black, it manages to keep a low profile, and doesn't intrude on the customization imagined by a guest decorator -  artist or designer, or both. Until September, the neutral tones of the Studio are sharpened by bright pink, gold and purple, whose ephemeral exuberance gives a festive tinge to the otherwise well-behaved bedroom. An elaborate mix of design (black métro tiles on the walls, a Chair One by Magis), cocooning (cushions a-plenty, art books and a host of refined attentions) and Parisian chic (Mariage Frères teas and treats imagined by the brilliant perfume chef, Michèle Gay); this place, obviously, is more than a mere chambre d'hôte.

And that is right. Marie and Catherine are pals, but they're also specialists. One tackles design, the other photography. They decided to make their own expertise and rich address book available to their guests: it's the concierge gone arty. On foot or on board a Smart car, in company or on one's own, and even for those who don't stay at the chambre, the hostesses at Studio 22 have imagined versatile runs through galleries, bookstores, shops and restaurants, peppered with interesting meet-ups. They're centered on the Marais but open to digression.

Marie, Catherine, where are you taking us? Maybe to one of these places:

Chic Cityrats (CCr): A common place?

Studio 22 (S 22): Our favorite place, Matali Crasset, 5 rue des Filles du Calvaire, Paris 3°

CCr:  A place of perdition?

S 22: The faraway Douarnenez, in 2008, when the Mais de Quimper lead us there during its photo festival, which we love. This year it handled the theme of perte, or "loss"

CCr: A sacred place?

S 22: Without hesitation the small church of Saint-Bartholomew, in Chodovice (a small village of Bohemia), with its furniture designed by Jakub and Maxim (the duo of Studio Qubus), its  Verner Panton chairs with the shape of the cross cut into their backs for the faithful, and Eiffel armchairs by the Eames for the priest

CCr: A place of predilection?

S 22: A bookstore of course, and right now our heart swings between that of the MEP (Maison Européenne de la Photographie), for the kindness of Edith, the true friend of all photographers, and the library close by, OFR, for its edgy, exacting choices...

CCr: A meeting place?

S 22: We can't wait for the opening of the very exciting "104" this Fall, a new Parisian space, transdisciplinary, a kind of Villa Medicis coupled with a Beaubourg (editor's note: large Parisian museum of modern and contemporary art)

CCr: A place to pass trough?

S 22: The Passage du Retz that shoots from the rue Charlot in Paris, because of its spirit, a place of temporary exhibitions, above all a place of questioning and investigation

CCr: A non-place?

S 22: Or rather several non-places, such as all of these anonymous spaces on which contemporary photograhers focus a lot of attention. Marc Augé studied them as part of his "anthropology of overmodernity": expressways, freeway junctions, airports, interchangeable hotel chains, large malls and service stations...

CCr: A secret place?

S 22: Our Studio 22, of course, sheltered from the outside world in its tree-filled yard, but right in the heart of the most arty and exuberant neighborhood in Paris. An exuberance we love and enjoyed in Pring's installation, when we gave her carte blanche for the studio's opening in June...

Kitchen Bazaar - Haut Marais

Forty-odd years after it was born, Kitchen Bazaar is going through a second youth: a new store, more than 80 m² large, is opening in the heart of the Marais, right before the online store is re-launched with a brand new layout.

Inside, bright-colored silicon utensils occupy entire walls, next to stainless steel instruments, high-end cooking material, objects by Bodum or Zak! designs. Luxury trash cans adorn the dark grey floor.

This Kitchen Bazaar wears its name well: one finds anything there, be it silicon ice cream spoons, cutting boards made of bamboo, miniature expresso machines, flashy lunch boxes or isothermal bags that look like they just tumbled down from a cosmonaut's pocket.

Fall-winter 08-09 collection

There's no denying it: Marika Chaumet works well. After handling the renovation of the flagship Repetto store on the rue de la Paix, the interior decorator managed once again to reconcile the tutu spirit with our obsession for accessories inside the new rue du Four shop.

As in the days of childhood, the pointe and demi-pointe shoes await, neatly arranged inside their wooden compartments. The timber floor, barre and large mirror panels set the atmosphere of a dance studio, a special climate made even more palpable by the leotards, cache-coeur and assorted dancewear. The ballet flats, tango or cancan shoes stand to attention, strictly sorted by range and by color.

It's the discipline of an afternoon dance lesson all over, and we'd almost fear lest a severe saleswoman come armed with a stick to rectify our posture. So stand straight, contract your abs, keep your head up and shop gracefully please!

Blanc d'Ivoire - rue de Saintonge - Parishighlight

1 to 7- New Blanc d'Ivoire store, rue de Saintonge

When walking down the rue du Pont-aux-Choux with its early XXth century workshop fronts, then down the rue de Poitou, now one of the trendiest fashion and design spots in Paris, one eventually stumbles upon a deserted little street of the Haut Marais, home to the brand new Blanc d'Ivoire store. The 400 m2 of this former industrial space are divided into 3 stories, bathed in white light filtered from an Eiffel glass roof. Envisioned as a lifestyle store, the new shop gathers almost all of the brand's ranges: textiles, tableware, furniture and other items... Concrete, metal and glass collide with soft patined wood inside this gigantic Blanc d'Ivoire loft. An apotheosis of urban ultra-chic Charme.

Diptyque - Le Marais - Paris

You don't forget an interview with the founders of Diptyque. They're a sound for sore ears, Yves Coueslant and Christiane Montadre. You should hear how they bicker, how they support each other, correct each other; they share an amused glance, or connive, or disapprove. Today they form a sparkling diptych - but hence the name does not stem.

In the beginning, they were three. Yves and Christiane praise in unison the reliable taste and refined nose of their delightful English partner, Desmond Knox-Leet. There's an interval of silence, profound. Yves recalls manly hikes along arid, sloping Greek paths - the origin of some extraordinary fragrances such as Phylosykos, an eau of figs. Memories and far-away lands: a good summary of what inspires Diptyque.

The brand's name is a matter-of-fact description of the original shop's window configuration, with its two angles looking out on a corner of the boulevard Saint-Germain as soon as 1961. Yves remembers the day when a bourgeois lady walked inside, appalled by the coarse bohemian spirit of the Maubert neighborhood, now a chic dependency of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

Places have always accounted for much of what Diptyque is. Places discovered in childhood, such as the Vietnamese house where Yves Coueslant spent the holiday in his youth, the inspiration for the Tan Dao fragrance. And places discovered in maturity.

And places where one gathers memories, treasures and creations, to offer them to friends and visitors. Thus the new store at 8, rue des Francs-Bourgeois, a prestigious address, yet devoid of snobbishness. The Diptyque logo is everywhere, a reminder of how precociously the brand developed a cohesive identity. Candles, perfumes and eaux de toilette crowd inside the intimate space. Black, white and gray prevail, illuminated by the hazy halo from an elegantly austere, made-to-measure chandelier. Interior designer Olivier Lempereur leaves his stamp near the Place des Vosges.

And Diptyque nourish their legend.

Jérôme Dreyfuss - Saint-Germain-des-Prés - Paris

Billy, Momo, Diego, Tom... They're so seductive, and we just love the touch of their skin, although we had to pay to have them around.

Jérôme Dreyfuss creates bags which he christens with boys' names because they are, in his words, "faithful companions."

For quite a while his collections only made their appearance on corners at the department stores. As the seasons came and went, the look of the skins varied, the cuts were renewed, the style matured. And so there was a time when Jérôme was ready to open a store in his name - nowhere else but at the 1, rue Jacob, right in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

The avowed inspiration for the décor, a 50's gymnasium, is rather discreet; though we'd spend a lot more time in gymnasiums if they all looked like this one, with its large angle window opening up on a nice little square and the rue de l'Echaudé, its soft materials and, above all, a very motivating collection of accessories.

Then there's Jean-Charles, the master on board and a rare coach. Friendly, obliging, always well-informed, he has a way of looking after visitors with consideration and no affectation. A rare feat in Paris.

As if we weren't already on the verge of yielding, each bag by Jérôme Dreyfuss is an example of responsible craftsmanship: an animal-friendly process of skin selection, clean techniques and materials for tanning the hides, respect for the workers... Buying an accessory here is almost a kind gesture!

Not that such encouragement is necessary. The bags talk for themselves. They all detain this particular quality of the most handsome leather items: you can't stop touching them, you have to possess them, here and now.

Jose, Bernard, Yves... It will be difficult to leave Jérôme Dreyfuss' new store without one of these lovely companions.

Jérôme has just created a great new place. By the way, Jérôme, where are you now? Perhaps in one of these other places:

Chic Cityrats (CCr): A favorite place?

Jérôme Dreyfuss (JD): Beaubourg [ed.: a large Parisian museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art].

CCr: A meeting place?

JD: My office.

CCr A common place?

JD: The metro.

CCr: A non-place?

JD: Non-Ville!!! It's a small village near Fontainebleau.

CCr: A forbidden place?

JD: I don't know any.

CCr: A place of perdition?

JD: The basement of the BHV [ed.: Bazar de l'Hôtel de Ville, whose basement is a large hardware store]. It's a bit of a common place too!

CCr: A place of worship?

JD: A synagogue, a church, a mosque, or else Le Printemps, Le Bon Marché [ed.: Parisian department stores]... it all depends on your personal views...
